Back homeWood variability
29/08/2008Trees are amongst the most variable living organisms in the planet. How variable is wood colour for a given species?

Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis hybrid’s sawn timber. Notice the range of available colours. Maybe the use of clones is exacerbating colour differences. Photo taken in Bahia State, Brazil.

When your dog has everything
26/05/2008I do not have a dog — I prefer cats, by the way — but I understand that pet owners like to buy gifts for their animals. But what happens when your dog has everything? Well, you just buy a ‘Pet Thing’.
‘Pet thing’, as seen in one of those two-dollar shops.

Intersection of poetry and marketing
17/04/2008Walking in Salvador, Bahia I came across this street sign, showing the (imperfect) intersection of poetry and marketing. The sign points to VinÃcius de Moraes Square, and someone put a sign for a music shop.
Unfortunately named
5/04/2008While in a forestry tour in Brazil we came across this car in one of the companies’ carpark in Canoinhas, Santa Catarina, Brazil. According to Brazilians the dealer’s German surname is pronounced ‘fukeh’.
This is not a door
4/03/2008I was coming back from a meeting in one of Mechanical Engineering’s rooms when I came across this door, which is not supposed to be a door.
The power of a definition: just stuck a sign that says ‘this is not a door’ on a door and, presto!, it is not a door anymore.
Crummy, hardly legible mobile camera photo.
